The Oils: Eat it? Or Wear it?

"Can I eat the oils?" That is the number one question I get when sharing with people to the best way to maximize the benefits from their essential oils.

Oils that are free from synthetic compounds (therapeutic grade), hopefully organic, and are from edible plants (lavender, lemon, frankincense, etc) are known to be edible. I consume my oils, because I trust where they came from. For example, on Doterra bottles, I know when the amber bottle has "supplement facts" on the label (like the bottom one in this picture below), it is generally safe to consume.

SAFE TO INGEST?

Now, I can't tell you the bottom oil is safe to consume and the one on top in the photo isn't, I am simply explaining how I decide what oil is ok for me to put in my mouth.

If you are going to ingest an oil, it's probably a good bet to speak with your doctor or a licensed aromatherapist.

Think of how concentrated these plant oils are, and realize that more than a drop has the capacity to really irritate or disrupt your body's perfect homeostasis. Dilution is always recommended.

The FDA considers essential oils to be GRAS (Generally Regarded AS Safe), but only as a very small percentage (diluted).

If you don't want to go there or can't find any information about whether that plant's oil is edible, here are some other areas that are very effective application spots for essential oils:

FEET

Putting essential oils on the bottom of your feet is widely talked about in the holistic health community. Not because the pores are largest there, because pores are for excreting materials, or where hair follicles reside. The good reasons for putting essential oils on your feet are many though. The feet are also a central zone for pressure points; many nerves and blood vessels end here, so putting the oil on the bottom of your feet allow the oils to be carried directly to many parts of your body. The skin on our feet is also less sensitive than other areas on our body, so stronger oils may be applied without issue. During flu and cold season, I apply Dr Oil to my feet, because the smell can be strong, while still getting the great immunity support throughout my body.

STOMACH

Using Gut Feeling on your stomach is a quick way to soothe any irritation and improve digestion. Also using more minty oils can help relax an anxious stomach

HEAD

I love to put more relaxing oil blends in my ears, on the back of my neck, and around my temples. Essential oils' have such small molecules they can even pass the blood brain barrier, which is an extremely protective membrane that protects you from toxicity and pathogens. So putting oils on and around your head helps the oils reach the brain to benefit mood without having to stop through other parts of the body to use their healing properties.

Spirit Collective dilutes the essential oil roll ons in food-grade fractionated coconut oil, so as not to irritate your skin or body.
