Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

You may have been asked, "What time were you born?" causing you to become immediately suspicious.

The newest form of stalking is now: reading your Natal Chart.

A natal chart is a graph of where the planets and constellations were, when you were born. It tells you what planets are in which constellations (signs), and in which house (12 houses). All this information can be pulled together and tediously interpreted to examine "who" you are, and how the planets are currently affecting you in this very moment. The latter of which I have personally found to be more helpful.

*For Example: I may be a Sun Sagittarius, but having Saturn in my 7th house the past 2/3 years has been rough. Had I known what planets were transiting through which houses earlier on, it would have provided me with a study guide and prep test for what was to come.

Rising Sign

Also known as your "ascendant" is the constellation at the Eastern Horizon at the time you were born (calculate yours here). This is very important because it creates a clock for which all the plants will move. Below is my natal chart used as an example. At the very left in the circle is a blue arrow, point fron AS (ascendant) to late in the sign of Cancer. Thats my Rising Sign.

Rising Signs represent your outer image, your mask, how the world sees you. Think of it as the beautiful window or door to your house that people must walk through to understand what lies inside. J.M. Wolfolk in The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need, says she has observed people to project a perfect blend of their Rising and Sun sign together. Having Cancer Rising moderates my Sagittarius Sun by giving my passion some tenderness.

Moon Sign

The moon changes positions through the Zodiac every two hours or so in the sky, which is why you need to know the time of your birth to know your moon sign as well (see link under 'rising sign'). If the Sun if your consciousness, the Moon is your instinct, or unconscious. Think of your Moon sign as the dark side of the Moon, the side that is hidden from others, though we know very well. It represents our emotions, how we feel in our world and minds; and often who we are when we dream. Upon finding out your Moon sign you may be not agree or feel like this sign, for the Moon sign is often a part of us we try to deny or hide. It is important to honor this representation of your inner self for less personal fractioning.

The beneficial aspects of our Moon signs is how we express pleasure and emotions, often our sensuality. Only those we trust the most will get to see these parts of us.

Sun Sign

The sun sign is what most people are talking about when discussing their zodiac sign. The Sun moves through each zodiac sign in the sky over about a month, hence the zodiac seasons. This 'planet', or luminary, is considered to be the most influential planetary placement in our chart, representing our ego, our life script in the play we are staring in here on Earth.

Putting it All Together

If we use the analogy of a character in a book, the Rising sign would be how your character is introduced from the narrator, the Sun sign is the script you are acting from, and the Moon sign is your inner dialogue sometimes revealed to the reader in italics.

You can start to see as well how different people can become, just from coming to understand these there zodiac signs.

If two people with the Sun sign Leo have different rising signs, one with Aries and one with Libra, you notice the person with Aries Rising can stoke the qualities in Leo like energetic and leadership, while the Libra Rising adds to the Leo qualities of social butterfly and creativity.

How do your three signs moderate, enhance, balance, and conflict each other?

In an up coming post we will discuss the Dualities (male/female), elements, and quality of each sign to give you more information to discover about yourself!
