Emotional Freedom

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

Tapping is the new wave of science backed self-care.

Yes, literally tapping on certain spots on your body can make you feel better immediately, and sustainability through time.

Let's talk about what we know...

Why Tapping?

Using our fingers to tap on specific points on our bodies activate what are called "meridians"

Meridians are spots of energy on and in our body.

Energy and information is constantly being created and conducted throughout our body. Theses meridians are energy highways for information to be passed along through one body system to another.

Through chemicals, our body creates these electrical impulses and energies that travel from cell to cell or organ to organ, or system to system.

Too much of a certain chemical, emotion, or thought pattern, creates an energetic malfunction or block in the body.

This is often felt as pain in the body because these certain negative emotions produce chemicals that can be damaging to our connective tissue over time and in large quantities.

Hello inflammation!

Or this can be experienced as ruminating thoughts, negative core beliefs, or an excess of a particular emotion.

So stimulating certain meridians can stimulate the energy and chemicals to begin their process through and out of the body.

Think of tapping as reminding the body to remove something.

When we use our fingers to tap on specific meridians on our body we are signaling to our brain that we are in no danger, to come out of Fight/Flight/Freeze, and to relax and process.

When we are dealing with a negative emotions, sometimes we lose our senses to our fear. We become consumed with negative and unhelpful thinking, which causes problems to exacerbate for us.

If we can use tapping to communicate with our brain that we are safe and sane, we can effectively process situations without letting it control us.

WHAT IS EFT

EFT stands for "Emotional Freedom Technique" coined and created by Gary Craig (find his website here)

It is also known as psychological tapping and is touted to benefits

-obsessive thoughts

-anxiety

-depression

-negative core beliefs

-PTSD

EFT is the type of tapping that I will be reviewing in this post.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Think of the current issue or emotion that is causing you problems right now. Stress? New job? Breakup? Insecurity?

  2. Rate the intensity of what you are currently feeling 1-10

  3. Set Up Statement. This is the statement you will be repeating while tapping on your meridians. It needs to have 2 components: 1st- identifying the issue, 2nd-vocalizing acceptance of yourself nonetheless. Example: "I feel alone, and I still know I am worthy" or "I feel ashamed, and I completely accept myself"

  4. Tap through the 9 meridians, while repeating your phrase several times. Try tapping each point about 9 times, while repeating your phrase about 3 times. Always start at the Karate Chop point (KC)

  5. Check in with the intensity of what you;re feeling, noticing if you feel calmer.

Here are the Nine Tapping Points:

-watch the video to see more detailed explanation of where each point is

  1. Karate Chop: small intestine: stressed out --> nourished

  2. Top of Head: governing vessel: unbalanced-->alignment with higher energy

  3. Eyebrow: bladder: escapism --> confidence

  4. Side of Eye: gallbladder: despair --> appreciation

  5. Under Eye: stomach: --> worry --> harmony

  6. Under Nose: governing vessel: hysteria --> calms the spirit

  7. Chin: central vessel: shame --> connected

  8. Collarbone: kidney: fearful --> passionate

  9. Underarm: spleen: mental exhaustion --> faith

*what each meridian/accupoint represents as far as emotion in balance and out of balance, i found on various TCM (traditional chinese medicine) websites and an Accupressure book by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden. Each point represents many things and can be up for interpretation, I suggest doing some of your own research to understand a bit more.

I also do this EFT with the phrase "I am sorry, I forgive you, I love you", which for me can encompass any and all emotions and releases.

Happy tapping!
