Chakras 101

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

You might have heard, we are all made of energy.

Everything is.

Our bodies, our thoughts, all have measurable vibrations and frequencies.

Our eyes can only 'see' objects with vibrations between 380 and 700 nanometers, called the Visible Light Spectrum.

But there is so much more out there that we are a part of, and just can't see.

For example, what about Radio Waves? Or X-Rays? Or Ultraviolet Sunlight?

These frequencies cannot be seen by humans, but they do exist and produce effects that we experience first hand:

-Getting burned through cloud cover thanks to UV sunlight

-Seeing a hairline fracture in your ankle through your skin

-Hearing music being played from across the country.

These examples demonstrate that there is much more to our world, and us, beyond what the eye can see.

So what have you heard about CHAKRAS?

What is a Chakra?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning 'wheel of light'. In Eastern spiritual and religious beliefs, these wheels of light are seen as a fundamental part of the energy exchange between us and everything else. There are seven main chakras, but many more exist within and around our bodies. These seven traditional chakras all line up with our spine, starting at the base of our tailbone and extending through the crown of our head.

Each chakra builds off of the energy of the previous chakra, cycling energy up through our spine, through all of our body systems, out the top of our head, and spills back down forming our energy field, and being cycled back up through our root.

Blocked Energy

^ This demonstrates a few important things.

First, if there is blocked energy in your first chakra, you are cycling up distorted energy through each chakra thereafter, causing more distortions and more imbalance as the energy moves upward. *so when clients come to me asking to heal their heart chakra, I explain that all the previous chakras need to be healed before achieving this.

Think of it like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: First you need food and water, if you have that then you have enough energy to seek shelter and safety, once that is achieved, then you have the ability to seek companionship and community, once you feel like you belong, it starts to build up how you feel about yourself, and finally once you feel good about who you are, you feel deserving to seek happiness and fulfillment. But none of this could happen first without food and water.

The same goes for your energy centers, or chakras. They need to be in harmony and balance with each other in order to give you the highest expression of each one.

Luckily your chakras and energy systems are kind of like a wonder because they not only can clean themselves of unwanted or unhelpful energy, they can build up their own to cycle it through your body.

Just like your amazing body which encounter all sorts of bacterias and viruses everyday, a HEALTHY body can can keep itself in homeostasis and vital working order.

But that is the catch: you have to have enough healthy energy to facilitate and build more.

*Usually what I see happen when working with clients, is the first few Energy Healing sessions are about removal of negative energies and purging toxic energies enough so that your body's own energetic mechanisms can start healing themselves.

How Does Energy Get Blocked or Distorted?

Every thing, person, situation, thought, emotion has its own frequency

(read more about frequency here and here).

Things that are "healthful" "beneficial" "positive" have higher frequencies than things that are "toxic" "unhelpful" "negative"

This goes on a sliding scale.

Things with lower frequencies cause us damage and harm.

Things with higher frequencies cause us health and benefit.

Because we are energetic beings that are constantly sharing and transmuting energy with other beings and things, it is not uncommon to come across damaging energies in our day to day.

Depending on what the energy is that became attached to you, determines where it sticks, what it does, and how difficult it is to remove. Also the things we think, the experiences we have, affect our energy centers as well.

Chakra can be

  1. Blocked

  2. Over active

  3. Under active

  4. Balanced

Also, the higher your frequency overall, the easier it becomes for your system to reject unhelpful energies.

In perfect balance, chakras will will be symmetrical, centered, spinning, bright, and free of blockages. Since we can't exactly "see" the chakras, I have created a quiz for you to help you determine which, if any of your chakras are out of balance.

Below I am going to give you some general information about the chakras, common things I encounter when working with clients during energy healings, what imbalances in each chakra may look/feel like, what the chakra in harmony looks/feels like, and tips for balancing/harmonizing the chakras at home.

~~All the tips for harmonizing the chakras at home are best done when repeated and over time. Just like getting your body healthy, your energy will take time and repetition.

~~Always consult a medical professional when you are dealing with an illness or question about your health

The Chakras and Their Descriptions

Root

The root chakra is located at the base of your spine, where your tailbone is. It is red in color and is referred to as the first chakra. Being the first, it represents our basic needs, survival instincts, our physical needs, family and community ties, and material concerns. Just as I mentioned above, these needs need to met FIRST in order to begin the healing journey. As your life circumstances fluctuate, the ability to stay balanced depends on the health and strength of your root chakra.

Imbalances:

Being your base, or steady rock, when this chakra is out of whack or blocked it can lead to addictions, excessive negativity, materialism, and greed. You might experience constipation or lower back or pelvic issues.

Balance:

When balanced this chakra leaves you feeling safe, full of energy, balanced, grounded, and a connected to the world around us. feeling stable and safe is the ground work necessary for all other successes and joys in your life.

Energy Work:

In order to balance this chakra, find ways to prove to your self that you have roots. I.E. call up a family member and get nostalgic, go to your local coffee shop and strike up a conversation with the barista. Simple things add up. Or you can plant your bare feet on the earth and literally 'ground' your energy downwards, stabilizing you (I do this every time before starting a Reiki session for a client). Get outside and be with nature. Cook a meal that makes you happy. Use red crystals. Anything that brings your stability. Visualize your Root chakra spinning, big vibrant, and red at the base of your spine.

Sacral

The sacral chakra is located two inches below your belly button and the small of your back. It is orange in color and is referred to as the second chakra. This chakra is concerned with passion, emotions, pleasure, etc. It relates to our reproductive organs, our flow of emotions, and our relationships with others. your ability to relate to others hinges on the health and balance of the sacral chakra.

As I mentioned previously, this chakra tends to store trauma and emotional imprints from long ago. For example, people tend to have certain imprinted emotions stuck in this area of their body, like loneliness, which make that emotion easier to sink into. These emotional imprints build muscle and gain traction every time we use them, therefore becoming more stuck.

Imbalances:

As your emotional center, an imbalance of the energy here may leave you feeling neurotic and out of control. It can also be related to sexual issues, tension, fear of intimacy, poor interpersonal relationships.

Balance:

When in harmony, this chakra allows you to express your creative side, follow passions, have safe and amazing sex, foster close intimate relationships, express all of your emotions equally and with resolution, and feel like you are more able to 'go with the flow'

Energy Work:

To balance this chakra You will need to embody the element of water (read more about the elements here). You need to express your emotions to prevent them from getting stuck. A great way to detoxify your body from stored emotions and other past chemical imprints is yoga or chi gong. These are my favorite ways to twist and tone and detoxify the body. By stimulating certain meridians on your body, you actually stimulate nerves and pathways that are correlated with different emotions. When doing healing with a client, I also make sure to continually clean out this chakra to enable free flowing energy.

Solar Plexus

The solar plexus chakra is located right at the apex of the ribs, top center of your stomach through mid back and is bright yellow. This chakra is all about your personal identity and how you relate to and express your personal power. This is who you demonstrate to the world. This is were your energy lies, ruling your digestive system and metabolism. Think of this as your 'empowerment' chakra.

Often times people are still unsure about who they are, or what they want, which does not allow this chakra to fully shine. Or people have subscribed to a version of themselves they feel pressures to be. Or they feel insecure and try to project 'who they are' through inflated ego.

Imbalances:

As the chakra of your identity, an imbalance here can manifest as trouble making decisions, lack of confidence or conceit, no willpower or being incredibly stubborn, anger, and restlessness.

Balance:

When in harmony, this chakra allows you to feel connected to your personal purpose and to make decisions with direction and ease. People with balanced Solar Plexus are peaceful and powerful, never egotistical or controlling, almost like they are so sure of their directions and power, they need not prove it, but just express it; they are empowered.

Energy Work:

Balancing this chakra on your own takes some self exploration. I would start here, with identifying your personal values, a super fun worksheet and guide to getting to know yourself. Also engaging in some "alternative rebellions" is my favorite way to really engage with autonomy and play. This is when you do little things to break rules and cross boundaries in non harmful ways; for example: pouring soda in the water cup you got at a restaurant (naughty!), dying a piece of your hair a fun color, saying "no" if you usually say "yes" and visa versa, playing hookie or taking a sick day for pleasure, turn up the music real loud in your car, getting a small tattoo or piercing, honestly the list could go on. Think of anything that you and a friend might laugh about when you tell them.

Heart

The heart chakra is located in the center of your chest and upper back. It is deep green in color and is referred to as the fourth chakra. This chakra is also noted to be the central chakra, the bridge between the lower three chakras and the upper three; it merges the energies of higher pursuits with grounded intentions. It is also the center of the majority of the electrical impulses and information sent and received throughout your body (check out heartmath.com).

Our heart centers around compassion, connection, and of course, love. It is our truest nature that lives here, only to be often closed off or covered up by the common pains of being alive. But once fully accessed, it is like feeling excitement and joy on the daily.

Imbalance:

An imbalanced heart chakra can lead to codependency, anger, feeling cold and callous to the world and people, feeling suspicious of the 'good' and weighed down. It governs the heart and the lungs, as well as associated illnesses (always consult a doctor when you are ill!).

*In many of my clients I see a need for a 'major energetic heart procedure'. This was taught to me by healer, and taught to her by her own healer. Basically a lot of damage can live here, from past lives too, in an effort to protect our most precious resource we tend to build walls around our heart to guard it, making it more difficult to heal or notice the initial damage.

Balance:

When in harmony, the heart chakra allows you to care deeply and purely for yourself and others. the energy flowing through this chakra facilitates compassion for all things, acceptance, looking for and seeing the good in all places, finding beauty, harmony, friendliness, and intimacy.

Energy Work:

Healing the heart chakra often requires inner child work, because it is so often as child we begin to build the walls around our heart or store hurt there. Rose essential oil is meant to balance the heart's energy as well (check out the Sky High oil). Or maybe write some cards to people you are grateful for and send them in the mail, or DANCE (this is probably my favorite way to harmonize and elevate the energy of the heart chakra. Put on a stellar tune and let loose.)

Throat

The throat chakra is often underestimated in its absolute importance to happiness and satisfaction. Located in the center of your throat and a sky blue color, it governs self expression and communication of personal Truth. How many times have you felt a knot in your throat while you hold back tears, or left something unsaid to someone, or didn't speak your Truth when it needed to be heard? That is the power of the Throat Chakra. I find the energy here can be most easily felt for people, even when out of tune to their body's messages. Above the heart chakra, the throat chakra communicates your love and your purpose to the world, it is a higher chakra, and is meant to communicate love, compassion and truth.

This is always the first thing I feel when tuning into someones energy, a knot in people's throat. Unspoken truths and feelings.

Imbalance:

Out of balance or blocked, this chakra can cause a difficulty in communication with people, feeling unheard, not being able to listen without speaking, rapid speech, vulgarity, gossip, and meanness. The two sides of the spectrum for this chakra are stifled and suppressed self expression, or the uncontrolled need to be heard and seen.

Balance:

When this chakra is balanced and in harmony you can expect to be a fantastic listener, speak clearly, confidently, and with compassion, express your truth and who you are to the world, wanting to help others with your wisdom and journey, and picking up on the energetic vibrations of other beings and things.

Energy Work:

To balance your throat chakra, you need to use your voice! I love to sing in the car; I have a playlist I called "Karaoke" which I play so I can sing along at the top of my lungs. Or I have heard it is helpful to scream into a pillow or alone in you car with the windows up, if that's more your speed. I also had a dance teacher encourage us to scream "NO!" and the top of our lungs while dancing, to help empower us to use our voice and stand up for ourselves. It was awesome. Also! Be a good listener, and speak from your heart.

Third Eye

Your Third Eye Chakra is the center of your intuition; it is the inner knowing, honest self-reflection, and spiritual contemplation that guides you through the life. I believe it is also where people's spiritual gifts are experienced. As the 6th chakra, having the five chakras below it strong and harmonized are imperative to understanding your spiritual gifts and trusting your innate intuition. Think of it as access to "Hive Mind": being able to sense and understand things beyond the five senses.

Children have incredibly strong intuition and Sixth Sense. It is only after being told over and over that what they are seeing or experiencing is part of their imagination, that this chakra begins to constrict.

Imbalance:

When this chakra is out of balance you may have hallucinations, be judgmental or intolerant of others, lack common sense, be easily influenced and rely on the help/opinions of others too often, have difficulty understanding the spiritual world or ideas, nightmares, experience poor eye sight, have excessive fear or forgetfulness.

Balance:

When in balance, the Third Eye gives you clarity; clarity of mind clarity of the world around you and an energetic connection to all things. You have focus and concentration and mindfulness for your inner world and outer world. The Third Eye allows you to sense things not normally perceived by your five senses. You feel calm and guided through life.

Energy Work:

To balance the Third Eye chakra meditation is incredibly helpful; you can chose a meditation that fits your style here. Visualization also helps strengthen your Third Eye. Since this chakra is ruled by the Moon, it would be doubly helpful to sit under the moonlight and practice visualizing what you want, or just let your imagination run wild. It is an incredibly creative chakra. Things that appear in your minds eye are essentially this chakra at work.

Crown

The Crown Chakra sits at the very top of your head and is considered the 7th of seven chakras. Its color is ultra violet and rules your connection to the spiritual realm and mystic. This chakra promotes connection to all things and understand of Oneness. With this knowledge comes a vast and undisturbed feeling of peace, unity, and joy.

-Oneness is the spiritual concept that all things are connected and have an intimate relationship of being the same, and originate from the same Source. Within oneness, all things are accepted, nothing is feared, and love is expressed in all things. While we may never fully experience Oneness, it is the concept and practice of it, that is important and aspirational.

Imbalance:

An unbalanced or blocked Crown can lead to feelings of superiority, separation, depression, and dissatisfaction with life, almost like removing a plant from sunlight.

Balance:

In harmony this chakra allows us to experience the Oneness explained above. It not only connects us to our purpose, but allows us to see our purpose laid out on a Greater Map. We feel peaceful, inspired, calm, and joyous, and lead by example for other to feel the same way.

Energy Work:

Think on this: I am in all things, and all things are within me. What does that mean to you? Can that be possible? Break it down into your daily life, and imagine how things originate from within you; experiences, perceptions, ideas, emotions. And then image seeing other people as yourself, having different experiences. When we do this, the feelings of compassion and peace for ourselves and others is profound.

I know this is a lot of information to process, but take it one step at a time, one chakra at a time, or one piece of information at a time.

As with all of life, it is not about being perfect, having all blocks removed and all energy centers functioning at max capacity. With each bit you learn and uncover, more will be revealed. It is a process.

Don't seek perfection,

Seek revelations.
